Products with an onboard computer can measure things about itself, e.g., the numbers of hours used, power usage. An example is a printer: It can report about the state of the inkt containers (in case of inktjet) and the number of pages printed so far. Of course the reporting part of the device must still be operational in order to get it out. In the car world this information is called OnBoard Diagnostics. In this model the same wording is used.
